The Integrative Rural Education Program (IREP) experiments year-round with new educational approaches in rural China. Its purpose is to develop effective methods that are tailored to the needs of rural children and that have been proven through practice to work in rural schools. Through first-hand participation in running a rural school and year-round investigation of surrounding schools, RCEF is gaining an in-depth understanding of the obstacles to and opportunities for reforms in a rural education system typical of many places in rural China. Full-time RCEF staff live and work in the school alongside local teachers. They act as sounding boards and help rural teachers develop a self-sustaining system for professional development. In addition, they collaborate to design better teaching methods and student assessment systems for achieving the governments curricular standards. As we accumulate deep, practice-based experience at one rural school, RCEF and local teachers wil disseminate lessons learned and best practices thorugh an online database customized for rural teachers. We will also produce guidebooks and organize training sessions and conferences to reach more rural educators and policymakers. Learn more: |
